“I will solve your problem for you. And you will pay me. And you don’t have to use the solution. If you want options, go talk to other people. But I’ll solve the problem for you the best way I know how. And you can use it or not - that’s up to you. You are the client. But you pay me.”
- Paul Rand paraphrased by Steve Jobs
Next time a client asks for 5 different logos I'm sending them this post in reply.

From a popular, high-traffic job board:
(Anywhere) We are a fast-growing, fully funded brand-focused videoblog network, looking to expand and hire an art director part time as we continue to grow. Designer should be proficient at hand-coding clean, well documented CSS, logo design, and if possible motion-graphics; interest in usability design; knowledge of PHP and Javascript/Flash is a plus. Examples of the current offering can be found at www.somecompany.com. Pay is commensurate with experience.
Is it me, or is this company really looking for three people? I can count the number of people I know who can do "motion-graphics", "logo design", and also write good code in multiple languages on one hand.
In all likelihood they'll end up with someone who convinces them that they can do it all and ends up doing none of it very well.

I was perusing the Church of Satan Website (no, I am not a Satanist, so let it drop) and stumbled upon this jewel at the end of The Nine Satanic Sins (emphasis mine):
9 - Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.
The whole list is a good read.

Richard Rutter has started a fantastic translation of Robert Brighurst's classic The Elements of Typographic Style specifically addressing the concerns of design for the screen:
For too long typographic style and its accompanying attention to detail have been overlooked by website designers, particularly in body copy. In years gone by this could have been put down to the technology, but now the web has caught up. The advent of much improved browsers, text rendering and high resolution screens, combine to negate technology as an excuse.
It's just begun, but it's already a great read. Check it out.
